Hermes Agent: connect monitoring, business memory and action without losing control

Hermes Agent: connect monitoring, business memory and action without losing control

Oracle finds a news item, ranks its importance, retains the source and proposes a hook and an angle. Turning that idea into a published article sounds like the obvious next step. Yet the gap between those two moments is where a business can lose control of what it says. A promising story may be misunderstood, already covered or used to suggest a service the company does not actually provide.

Hermes Agent can connect monitoring, business memory and action if the workflow keeps retrieved information, approved decisions and completed publication separate. The opportunity is not just faster writing. It is a reviewable handover at each stage, without rebuilding the context or quietly giving an agent authority to speak for the business.

Hermes Agent and AgentOS are different layers

Hermes Agent is Nous Research’s open-source agent framework. Its official repository documents tools, scheduled tasks, persistent memory and reusable procedures known as skills. It can organise multi-step work using the models and permissions configured for it. Our business guide to Hermes Agent explains how that role differs from the model doing the reasoning or writing.

AgentOS, presented on agentos.guide, is an organisational layer around several tools and agents. Its interface names should not automatically be treated as features of the official Hermes core. Apollo provides voice input; Mission Control brings agents and activity into one view; Oracle organises monitoring; an Obsidian vault provides shared memory; SearchOS is presented as a layer for search-engine and AI-search visibility. These are functions to examine in that integration, not five business capabilities guaranteed by every Hermes installation.

The architecture guide describes a task board, worker agents and a process that reads from and writes to the vault. It also describes checks on risky actions. We consulted the documentation without installing or testing this layer. Those descriptions do not establish connector reliability or mandatory human approval for every publication.

Oracle makes the source-to-angle handover tangible

The guide shows Oracle with six ranked signals, each carrying a source and “your angle”, and reports that the last consultation took place four hours earlier. That is a useful mechanism to preserve: instead of receiving a pile of links, an editor receives a selection already shaped for an editorial task. The function is then presented as a way to turn a signal into a social post or website article.

Selection does not remove the need to read the source. Ranking answers “what looks important?” It does not yet answer “is this accurate, useful to our customers and defensible under our name?” The editor must be able to open the original, check its date and locate the passage supporting the hook. If Oracle treats a comment as an official announcement, the workflow should stop before a public draft is produced.

A useful Oracle record therefore carries the source, the selected fact, its priority, a proposed angle and any uncertainty. Leaving out uncertainty can save a few minutes of reading and create the need for a public correction later.

Shared memory supplies context, not automatic authority

External monitoring does not know your commitments. It may recommend a technology your team has already assessed and rejected, or revive an outdated description of your services. Useful memory supplies the missing context: previous articles, approved offerings, service boundaries, earlier decisions and terminology.

A shared Obsidian vault can hold those records. Sharing a folder does not establish which note is authoritative, however. Exploratory conversations, approved decisions and drafts must remain distinguishable. Nor should common memory give every agent access to every customer file. Our Company Brain guide explains how to organise references, versions and ownership. The additional question here is how those references travel all the way to a specific action.

That distinction changes the assignment. “Update an existing article” is a different job from “write something new”. Memory prevents duplication only if the agent actually checks the corpus and reports what that search did and did not cover.

A complete workflow: an owner and evidence at every step

Consider an illustrative service business explaining a new software feature to prospects. This is a proposed workflow, not a tested customer deployment. Oracle supplies the starting material; Hermes orchestrates the authorised steps. Each handover depends on the previous result.

  1. Signal. The monitoring agent captures the link, date, useful passage and ranking. The monitoring owner defines the sources to follow. Evidence: an accessible source record, not a summary with no origin.
  2. Qualification. The editor confirms novelty, relevance to prospects and factual support. The agent searches related articles. Evidence: the accept or reject decision, its reason and the corpus links checked. An ambiguous announcement remains unconfirmed.
  3. Context. The business owner identifies the applicable records: what the company can deliver and what it excludes. The agent retrieves their dates and versions. Evidence: the references used and unresolved conflicts. An old note does not become the current offering.
  4. Brief and draft. The agent proposes a reader question, an explanation and a call to action consistent with the offering. The writer or content owner separates sourced facts, interpretation and invented examples. Evidence: the brief version, draft and outstanding checks.
  5. Approval. An authorised person reviews the text, material claims, links and visuals. Evidence: the approver, decision, exact version and any reservations. Approval of an earlier version does not cover later additions.
  6. Authorised publication. The publishing account releases only the approved version to the approved destination. The operator checks the CMS response, then the public page and mobile view. Evidence: post identifier, URL, timestamp and checks of the content actually visible. A saved draft is not a published article. After a network error, inspect the existing state before retrying.
  7. Measurement. The acquisition owner tracks indexing, impressions, clicks and relevant enquiries separately from content volume. Evidence: the period, data source, changes made and attribution limits. Findings inform the next brief; they do not automatically become commercial policy.

This requires a practical separation of powers: an agent preparing a sensitive action must not be able to grant itself approval. CMS permissions and integration controls need to enforce that boundary; a careful prompt is insufficient. Our article on Hermes Agent and mcp-serve, from conversation to action examines another context handover and the same self-approval risk. MCP is not required for every monitoring workflow.

Displayed traffic and open-source software do not establish ROI

A display showing 1,313 clicks a day describes a presented traffic level. Without comparable periods, an action history and acquisition data, it does not establish that SearchOS caused the growth. It does not demonstrate qualified leads or additional customers either. Assess your workflow through qualification, writing and review time, corrections, tool costs and genuinely relevant enquiries as well.

“Free” needs similar care. Hermes is distributed under the MIT licence; the complete workflow is not necessarily free. The Apollo guide itself mentions a per-minute cost for the voice connection. Models, remote services, hosting and maintenance may add costs. An existing subscription does not establish that every call made by an integration is included. Locally stored memory may also be sent to a remote provider during processing.

Start with one story and earn the next permission

For a first trial, choose a non-sensitive news item and ask for the complete evidence package through to a draft, with no automatic publication. Include a conflicting source and a topic already covered. Check whether the agent can suspend an unsupported claim, avoid a duplicate and produce work the editor can genuinely verify. Our guide to choosing an SME’s first AI project helps define that scope and its acceptance criteria.

Then authorise a limited publication with a named owner, a properly restricted account and public checks. The goal is not to collect Apollo, Oracle and dashboards. It is to turn a source into useful content without losing context or decision rights along the way.

Sources and limitations

This is documentary analysis, not an integration test or a customer success claim. The proposed workflow is a recommendation to implement and test, not a guarantee supplied by these tools.
