Three plans fit into one polished image. The exclusions are in tiny print. They zoom in, lose sight of the column headings, then call to ask what the graphic was supposed to explain. This illustrative scenario raises a practical design question: did you deliver a picture, or information someone can use?

An accessible AI infographic communicates its meaning even when someone cannot use the image. It combines a readable visual with an appropriate text alternative and, for complex information, a structured explanation or accessible data table. Before accepting the asset, ask your supplier how a reader will retrieve the conditions, figures and conclusion without relying on the graphic.

Published 22 October 2026. Design and acceptance guidance, not a compliance audit.

Why can a polished infographic fail its reader?

A visual layout helps some people compare information quickly. It can also lock every detail into one image: text cannot be selected, labels become too small, and categories depend entirely on colour. A person with low vision, a screen-reader user and an executive checking their phone may then receive different amounts of information.

In the plan comparison, this becomes a buying problem. If exclusions are unreadable, the prospect cannot check whether a plan fits. Those conditions need another readable presentation, not just a higher-resolution export. The W3C recommends using real text rather than images of text where the presentation can be achieved without embedding the words in an image.

What should alt text say for an AI infographic?

A short text alternative identifies the image and its purpose on the page. For a complex chart, it can introduce the subject and tell the reader where to find a detailed description. It should not become an exhausting inventory of every decorative icon.

The W3C tutorial on complex images distinguishes that short description from the detailed equivalent. The latter conveys essential information: values, relationships, trends or steps needed to understand the graphic. “Infographic of our plans” does not give the reader access to the exclusions in our example.

A practical acceptance requirement: below the visual, include a section called “Compare plans in text”, covering plan names, inclusions, exclusions and important conditions. The alt text could say: “Plan comparison; details appear in the Compare plans in text section below.” That section must actually exist where the description says it does.

For numerical graphics, a table with clear headers lets readers retrieve values without interpreting bar heights. Include an explanation of the trend when the table alone does not convey the argument. Also check sources, denominators and scales: accessible data can still be misleading.

Why test colour and mobile reading together?

A red-and-green legend may look obvious on the designer’s monitor. On a phone, shrinking labels can leave colour as the only usable cue. Label categories directly and, where appropriate, add distinct shapes or patterns. Readers should not need to identify a colour to know which series they are looking at.

The WCAG criterion for non-text contrast addresses graphical elements needed for understanding, with a 3:1 threshold against adjacent colours and defined exceptions. That threshold does not replace text-contrast requirements or a review of the whole page. Passing an automated colour check is therefore not enough to declare an infographic compliant.

For mobile, simplify the comparison first: fewer details inside the image, with conditions in nearby text. Zoom can help some readers, but it should not be your only answer when essential information has become too small.

Does the surrounding text also help search visibility?

Google says it uses alt text, page content and image analysis to understand an image’s subject. Its image SEO guidance calls for useful descriptions in context, not keyword stuffing. Describe what this graphic contributes to this page rather than repeating “AI infographic” in every description.

For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google recommends making important content available in textual form. This does not guarantee indexing, citation or recommendation. The documentation concerns Google Search features; it does not establish identical ranking mechanisms across other assistants.

What should you check before accepting the work?

Replace “does it look good?” with a task. Give the content to someone who did not write the brief. Ask them to locate an important condition and explain the conclusion. Then check whether they can retrieve the same information without relying on the image.

Meaning: can they explain what is being compared and which decision the content supports?

Text equivalent: is essential information available in a structure that makes sense?

Assistive reading: does a screen-reader test let someone find the description and navigate the data?

Mobile: can they read labels and conditions on an actual phone without a cumbersome sequence of zooming and panning?

Consistency: do the visual, description and underlying data present the same version of the facts?

This targeted acceptance check can uncover defects worth fixing. It is not a full accessibility audit. If your organisation needs to establish compliance, have a qualified person assess the applicable scope and criteria.

Test one asset before scaling production

In the Say Digital Framework, a prototype must demonstrate a useful result before its template is reused. For an infographic, that means readers can find the information, understand the comparison and take the next step. Tests come before controlled release; feedback improves the template rather than disappearing into the next export.

When you organise content production and measurement, carry those acceptance requirements into every brief. Say Digital can scope an initial asset, review the reading experience and test its variations before you commit to recurring production.

Discuss
