If a compromise is confirmed, clean the affected environment, address the entry point and test the fixes before requesting a security review. Deleting one file or buying a new certificate does not, by itself, remove a Safe Browsing warning.

For a small business, the immediate consequences are practical. A prospect cannot safely reach an enquiry form; staff hesitate to share the website; paid campaigns still send people towards a potentially compromised page. The first decision is how to protect visitors and organise an investigation, not how to persuade them to bypass the warning.

1. Identify the warning before choosing the recovery procedure

Google Safe Browsing can warn users before they visit a dangerous page or download a harmful file. Malware, a phishing form or a deceptive third-party element may be involved. The wording varies by product and browsing context. Save the full message, affected URL and a screenshot without asking colleagues to open the suspect page.

Security issues in Search Console: this report describes security problems Google has detected, with categories and example URLs where available. It is the starting point for a security review request.

Manual actions: this separate report concerns actions relating to Google Search spam policies. It has its own review process. A manual action and a security issue can coexist; resolving one does not establish that the other has been resolved.

A certificate or private-connection error: this concerns matters such as HTTPS connection validation. Investigate the certificate, domain and TLS configuration. A valid certificate does not establish that the website’s content is safe.

A traffic drop alone does not prove any of these situations. Equally, a page that still appears in search results is not necessarily safe. Choose the investigation from the message actually observed, rather than treating every warning as the same kind of Google penalty.

2. Read the report without mistaking its examples for a complete inventory

Open Search Console directly through your usual account, rather than following a link in an unexpected email. Check that the property covers the relevant domain and protocol. If nobody has the required access, identify the legitimate owner and arrange access recovery. Passing passwords around a messaging thread creates another problem instead of solving this one.

Open each category in the official Security issues report. Record the detection date, issue type and example URLs. Google explains that these URLs are a sample, not a complete list. A category without example URLs does not mean that no pages are affected.

Ask the technical lead to investigate the mechanism behind those examples: an altered shared template, an unauthorised page, a harmful download, a conditional redirect or an external resource. One modified template may affect many pages that the report does not name. Deleting only the listed URLs could leave the same mechanism running elsewhere.

The report may describe behaviour you cannot reproduce on your own device. Google says that warnings depend on browsing context. A successful visit while logged in as an administrator therefore does not establish a false positive, particularly where an attacker has arranged to show different content to different visitors.

3. Protect visitors while retaining evidence for the investigation

Where dangerous content is confirmed, agree appropriate containment with the hosting provider: isolate affected areas, suspend a download or temporarily restrict the service. Pause campaigns pointing there and use a business contact channel independent of the website. Do not announce reopening before checking what public visitors will actually receive.

Before cleanup, retain a restricted-access copy of the compromised environment and available logs. The WordPress hacked-site documentation recommends documenting symptoms and taking a backup before making changes. This copy supports investigation and recovery from a mistaken intervention; it must not be relabelled as a known-clean backup.

For the wider recovery decisions, including access recovery and choosing between restoration and cleanup, see hacked WordPress site: regain control. The particular deliverable here is a record of verifiable fixes that addresses Google’s security finding, rather than a second general incident checklist.

4. Clean the affected environment and close the entry point

The agreed cleanup scope should cover the files, database, accounts and configuration actually involved. Investigate active components, must-use plugins, scheduled jobs and relevant third-party resources. The findings determine the scope: this list directs investigation and does not imply that every component has been compromised.

Reinstalling a component from a trusted source may replace modified files without removing additional files left by an attacker. Restoring a backup can bring back the vulnerable component or stolen access that enabled the incident. Either approach still requires checking the cause, updating or removing risky components, revoking unauthorised access and rotating affected secrets in a cleaned environment.

A scanner or security plugin can help identify indicators. Its result alone is not evidence of complete remediation. The WordPress hardening guidance places tools within a wider approach that includes updates, access control, backups and monitoring. A public scan also cannot establish everything happening inside the hosting account.

If the precise entry point remains unknown, record that uncertainty in the technical handover. Investigate the remaining hypotheses instead of inventing an explanation for the review form. The uncertainty should shape the validation work and monitoring after the site reopens.

5. Test the fixes against each reported issue

“The homepage loads” is not an adequate acceptance test. Match each reported category to a correction and a test. Check the example URLs, other pages using the same templates, redirect destinations and implicated third-party resources. A suitably equipped professional should investigate potentially hostile content without exposing ordinary staff devices to it.

Has the identified harmful content been removed throughout the affected scope?

Has the vulnerable component or abused access path been fixed or removed?

Do public journeys, forms and intended downloads work without the unwanted behaviour?

Can Google reach the relevant pages for verification, without an accidental access block?

Who retains the test results and responds to a new alert?

Hiding a problem behind a login or simply moving to another domain does not demonstrate remediation. Clearing a cache can help serve the corrected version after a fix, but it does not remove persistent malicious code or clear Google’s security finding by itself. Check the version visitors receive without treating cache management as the cleanup.

6. Submit a factual security review request

Once all issues listed in the report have been fixed and tested, use its review-request control. Explain the identified problem, the work performed and the results of verification. Concrete operations are more useful than an unsupported statement that the site is now completely secure.

A useful working outline is: reported category; investigation beyond the example URLs; harmful elements removed; entry point fixed or remaining uncertainty; and validation results. Adapt it to the work actually completed. Do not include passwords, technical secrets or customer data. If someone else performed the cleanup, obtain their findings before describing the intervention to Google.

Google says reviews can take days or weeks and asks owners not to resubmit before receiving a decision on the outstanding request. That is not a service deadline. Neither a hosting provider nor a cleanup specialist can guarantee the date Google will remove a warning. If the request is rejected, investigate the unresolved findings rather than submitting the same account again.

If the Manual actions report also contains an issue, follow that report’s instructions separately. Removal of a security warning does not guarantee an immediate traffic recovery or restoration of previous search rankings. Technical recovery, Google’s review and search performance are related but different outcomes.

7. Reopen with an owner for continued monitoring

Follow the decision in Search Console and its associated notifications. Then check the report, the public site and the business journeys that were interrupted. If a warning persists, record the product displaying it and the exact URL. A third-party antivirus warning, a TLS error and Safe Browsing may require different follow-up procedures.

Assign responsibility for updates, alerts, tested backups and access reviews. Incident cleanup addresses the current compromise; ongoing monitoring aims to detect another change. Keep the handover specific about what was fixed, what was tested and what remains under observation. That distinction lets the business decide when to restart campaigns without confusing an operational decision with a guarantee.

FAQ: dangerous-site warnings and Google reviews

Will a new SSL certificate remove the warning?

Not if the warning concerns phishing or malware. The certificate protects the connection; the content and compromised access need separate remediation. Diagnose a certificate error through its own technical checks.

I cannot see a warning. Can I report a false positive?

Not on that observation alone. Compare the exact message, report categories and investigation findings. If you conclude after investigation that the classification is wrong, document the evidence and use the appropriate official procedure.

Is a clean result from a plugin enough?

No. Validate the scope, entry point and affected visitor journeys. A single tool may not detect every account change, component or conditional behaviour. Keep its findings as one part of the evidence.

Should I request indexing instead?

An indexing request does not replace a security review. Use the report matching the issue. Do not treat search visibility as proof that the environment is clean.

Scope the cleanup before requesting the review

Need to coordinate remediation, evidence of fixes, a review request and monitored recovery? Bring the observed warning and known scope to a conversation with Say Digital, without sharing secrets. Agree the intervention scope and acceptance criteria in writing rather than assuming that a clean scan or review submission completes the job.

IT governance and maintenance help frame technical ownership. Cloud and VPS hosting covers a separate ongoing operating need; it does not replace verified cleanup or Google’s decision on a security review. The linked service pages are in French.

Follow the symptoms you observe

If the reported URLs send visitors to another domain, first document the redirect and its triggering conditions before describing the fixes in your review request.

Official sources

The procedures linked above come from Google Search Console, Google Safe Browsing and WordPress.
