The developer works in Cursor or Claude Code. Someone has to find the request, check what the team has already promised and carry that context into the development tool. Hermes Agent’s mcp-serve extension offers a different way to connect those two places.

mcp-serve makes Hermes Agent an MCP server. A compatible client, such as Claude Code, Cursor or Codex, can read conversations from the Hermes profile being served and call the bridge’s functions. Instead of Hermes consuming an external service, another agent gets access to selected Hermes capabilities. That includes more than reading: the bridge can send messages through connected accounts and respond to approval requests.

For a business, the useful question is whether this connection can support a traceable change proposal without losing customer commitments or handing the same agent unchecked authority to act. This article examines the documented product, then sets out an illustrative workflow and the controls it would need.

In this article

Why the direction of the MCP connection matters

What mcp-serve actually exposes

From a customer conversation to a proposed change

Who approves a sensitive action?

How to choose a useful extension

What a first trial should establish

Hermes Agent becomes the MCP server, not just the client

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It gives AI applications a common way to access tools and context supplied by a server. In a familiar setup, Hermes Agent is the client using an external service. With mcp-serve, Hermes supplies the interface and the development application is the client.

The official catalogue entry identifies mcp-serve version 1.0.0, maintained by NousResearch, requiring Hermes 0.22.0 or later. It points to a pinned code revision. The current command is
hermes mcp-serve
; the former built-in command was
hermes mcp serve
. That distinction matters when reading older material about the feature.

The server communicates over standard input and output, or stdio. The MCP client launches a process and talks to it. This is not, by default, a public HTTP endpoint anyone can reach. But local process transport does not make the information harmless: the launching client receives the capabilities exposed through the selected profile.

Our business guide to Hermes Agent explains the broader relationship between models, tools and human control. The narrower question here is how conversation context reaches the application where a developer prepares a change.

What mcp-serve exposes — and what it does not

The README at the referenced revision describes functions to list conversations, read messages, retrieve attachments and poll or wait for new events. The history comes from the Hermes profile being served. Installing a plugin does not grant access to every conversation across a company.

The bridge also provides functions to list sending destinations, send messages through connected platform accounts and handle approval requests visible during the session. Reading history does not require a running Hermes messaging gateway. Sending does: that gateway holds the platform connections.

An optional
--tools
flag, off by default, adds selected Hermes tools for web search, browsing, vision, image generation, skills and text-to-speech. Availability depends on the profile’s enabled tools and configured backends. Calls use that profile’s provider credentials and may spend its credits.

Terminal, file tools, code execution, process management, kanban and delegation are not exposed. The allowlist is deliberate, but it should not be mistaken for complete isolation. Web tools can reach local-network addresses, for example. A browser and an authenticated account can still carry meaningful authority without a shell.

An illustrative workflow: request, proposal, approval, verification

Suppose a customer writes: “Add a reference field to our form, but keep the old export working until Friday.” An earlier reply also commits the team not to delete historical records. This is an illustration of how the connection could be used, not a tested customer deployment or evidence of a business return.

Retrieve the request and its commitments. The MCP client reads the relevant conversation through Hermes and retrieves an attachment if needed. It prepares a short account of the requested field, the export that must stay available and any unresolved question, with references to the source messages. The latest message does not automatically overrule an earlier commitment.

Prepare the change in the development environment. Claude Code, Cursor or Codex can use its own authorised tools to propose code, tests and a customer reply. Those development capabilities do not come from a terminal exposed by mcp-serve. The plugin supplies conversation context; the coding client retains its own tool permissions and restrictions.

Route a sensitive action to the responsible person. Before production deployment or a customer message, the business should require approval of the scope, destination and content. This is an operating control to implement, not a claim that the plugin forces every action through a human.

Check the outcome before closing the task. The developer verifies the new field, the existing export and the preservation of old records. If a message is authorised, its sending result needs a separate check. A prepared reply, a passing test and a delivered message are different states.

Keeping the source messages alongside the proposal lets the reviewer check whether the change preserves the promised export behaviour. If the conversation conflicts with the specification, a responsible person must resolve the difference. Where the answer depends on standing references — a contract, support policy or release procedure — organised business memory, or a Company Brain, can help establish which reference applies. mcp-serve does not organise that knowledge or resolve conflicting sources on its own.

The approval boundary needs particular attention

The plugin includes functions for viewing and responding to certain approval requests. It would therefore be misleading to describe the bridge as inherently human-approved. If an external client can propose an operation and then approve its own request, the integration may move the control boundary rather than preserve it.

Our organisational recommendation is to separate preparation, authorisation and execution for sensitive actions. Name who can approve a customer message, publication or production change. Prevent the requesting client from approving itself. Retain the request, decision and outcome. These controls need to be enforced and tested in the chosen integration; the presence of MCP is not evidence that they exist.

The served profile is a practical first boundary. A dedicated profile containing only the conversations and accounts needed for the workflow reduces exposure compared with an all-purpose personal profile. It does not replace finer conversation-level controls where those are required. An AI agent’s right to act follows its actual identity and permissions, not just a prompt telling it to be careful.

Customer messages are also material to interpret, not administrative instructions. An attachment asking the agent to ignore an internal rule should not gain that authority simply because the agent retrieved it while working on a legitimate request.

Choose the missing capability, not the largest plugin catalogue

A broad catalogue makes extensions easier to discover. Its size says little about which one your workflow needs. The official, verified and community tiers described in the Hermes plugin catalogue documentation signal provenance and review status. They are not guarantees of fitness for your data or freedom from risk.

Start with the gap. If developers cannot reliably recover customer context from their working environment, mcp-serve addresses a specific problem. If the need is an occasional summary, a reviewed manual handover may be enough.

Map data and identities. Which conversations are in the profile? Which accounts can send? What will the MCP client’s model provider receive? Locally stored history does not necessarily stay local when another application reads and processes it.

Check maintenance. Identify the maintainer, minimum Hermes version, pinned revision and rollback path. Compatibility today does not remove the need to test an update before expanding access.

Budget the whole workflow. mcp-serve is MIT-licensed. A free plugin does not cover AI-client subscriptions, provider calls, hosting or review time. Our guide to AI-agent costs for SMEs explains why the budget must include the workflow around the model, not just the software licence.

What a first trial should establish

Use a non-sensitive case and produce a proposal without automatic sending. Check whether the agent finds the correct request, identifies the commitment that must survive the change, notices a contradiction and produces something a reviewer can inspect. Also test a rejected approval and a failed send: neither should become a reported success.

Then compare the workflow with the existing manual handover. Track preparation and review time, mistakes, rework, billed calls and the permissions granted. No improvement is demonstrated by this article. Expansion should follow results observed in your workflow, with a way to disconnect the bridge.

For an SME looking for an AI agency in Paris, the starting question is not how many plugins can be added. It is which break between customer conversation and delivery needs fixing, and who keeps the decision. Hermes Agent with mcp-serve makes that connection possible; the value depends on how the access is scoped and the outcome is checked.

Want to examine that handover in your own process? Parler avec un expert — speak with a Say Digital expert to define the workflow, access boundaries and evidence needed before considering automation. The booking page is in French.

Sources and verification scope

Documentary checks dated 28 October 2026: the official mcp-serve manifest; the plugin README and implementation at the pinned revision, including the bridge and tool allowlist; and the catalogue documentation. These sources describe software capabilities. The workflow and organisational controls are editorial analysis, not an installation, a message-sending test or a demonstration of end-to-end autonomy.

How mcp-serve connects Hermes Agent to Claude Code, Cursor and Codex: customer context, proposed changes, approval boundaries, provider
